A Green Chip Index, Built on Just Two Stocks

A third green day for chips, carried by Super Micro and Dell. Only 44% of my universe rose, on falling volume, with every hyperscaler closing red.

These are model estimates, not forecasts anyone can guarantee, and not investment advice. The dot before each probability is its band: 🟢 low · 🟡 moderate · 🟠 high · 🔴 very high, with thresholds set separately for each scenario. SOXX is the main US semiconductor ETF, the basket I track; from peak is the fall from the highest close of this cycle; VIX is the market’s fear gauge; the high-yield spread is the extra interest riskier companies pay to borrow, my early-warning line for funding stress. My internal alert is at Level 3, on a scale where 3 is the highest.

📌 SUMMARY

  • A bounce that fades from the inside: SOXX (the U.S. semiconductor ETF, my benchmark) rose +0.51% to 555.52 — a third green day — but only 44% of my universe rose (down from 86.5%), on falling volume (about 0.6x the 50-day average). An index lifted by a handful of names.
  • The engine was servers on earnings, not the sector: Super Micro +19.8% on record orders and a margin surprise, Dell +9.3% in its wake — but every hyperscaler closed red (Microsoft −1.9%, Meta −2.6%, Google −1.5%), and memory gave back ground (SK Hynix −3.9%). NVDA +2.3% reclaimed its 50-day line.
  • Fragility and a capex overhang: extension +40.6%, VIX 17.3, still 8 distribution days and no valid follow-through. After the close, Alphabet spooked investors on capex. Regime 🟠 ALERT, Level 3 active (5th day), de-escalation 0/4.

Today the regime stays at 🟠 ALERT, and my highest internal warning, Level 3, is active for a 5th day.

📰 CHRONICLE (July 22)

A third bounce day for chips — but markedly lower quality than the two before it. SOXX gapped down to 538.75 (also the session low), then climbed all day to close +0.51% at 555.52, near its high (561.18) — an encouraging intraday reversal in form. In substance, the rally narrowed sharply: only 23 of 52 universe names closed higher (44%, down from 86.5%), the universe average was a bare +0.13% (median negative), and volume fell to 6.27M — about 0.6x the 50-day average and −38% from the prior day. A green index carried by two names, not a sector restarting.

The engine was AI servers on earnings: Super Micro +19.8% to 30.56 after a preliminary update flagging more than $60 billion in new orders and gross margin guided to 15–17% (up from 8%-plus), a positive margin surprise; Dell +9.3% and HPE +3.0% on the AI-hardware read-through. The lead chips held up (Broadcom +2.7%, NVDA +2.3%, AMD +1.5%). But the rest of the chain slipped: memory −0.2% (SK Hynix −3.9%) gave back part of the July 21 jump; EDA −2.6%, equipment −1.1%, Corning −5.1%, Palantir −6.1%. Above all, the hyperscalers all closed red (Microsoft −1.9%, Meta −2.6%, Google −1.5%, Amazon −1.1%): the group that funds the entire capex cycle did not participate, and the press flagged hyperscaler AI debt "in focus" ahead of earnings.

On the broad tape, a cautious, slightly negative session: the S&P 500 −0.14% to 7,498.96 (−1.46% from its record), the Nasdaq Composite −0.57% to 25,690.90, the Dow flat. Oil jumped (Brent 93.07, +1.8%; WTI 88.64, +4.2%) on an 11th night of U.S.-Iran strikes and a Gulf storm, putting inflation back in focus — the stress showed up in rates more than stocks. After the close, Alphabet reported a strong quarter but fell in the after-market because its capex-growth guidance spooked investors — a direct reminder of the sector's number-one variable (an after-hours event, not reflected in the July 22 close).

🚦 SCOREBOARD — 9 signals (🟢 calm · 🟡 watch · 🟠 alert · 🔴 breakdown)

  • S1 Moving averages 🟡 (up from 🟠): NVDA reclaimed its 50-day line (212.06 vs 209.68, +1.14%) after 4 days below; SOXX is a 6th day below (−2.31%) but on light volume, so the "below with above-average volume" alert condition isn't met. Both well above their 200-day line.
  • S2 Structure 🟠 (unchanged): a higher high (561.18) and higher close; it holds the 536.12 pivot. Lower highs since the 655.95 peak are not yet invalidated — a new high is needed to confirm a turn.
  • S3 Momentum 🟠 (unchanged): SOXX daily MACD still negative but its histogram is recovering (−7.36 to −5.26); the weekly bearish MACD cross is still forming (value 62.07 < signal 64.24) on an in-progress bar — reconfirm Friday. NVDA daily MACD is bullish and strengthening.
  • S4 Breadth 🟠 (unchanged): the universe collapsed to 44% higher (23 of 52) from 86.5% — SOXX's green was carried by few names. Equal-weight measures were mixed. Below the 60% de-escalation bar: July 21 was an isolated spike. The multi-week divergence is intact.
  • S5 Rotation and canaries 🟢 (unchanged): my canary basket is −2.58 points relative over 20 sessions (from −1.97); rotation still favored AI; 0 canaries at 52-week lows.
  • S6 Distribution 🟠 (unchanged): 8 distribution days (heavy institutional selling) still active — no new one (SOXX rose; the Nasdaq proxy fell but on lower volume, so it doesn't qualify) and none decayed. Still a heavy count.
  • S7 Volatility 🟢 (unchanged): VIX 17.29 (+1.4%), below 20; my short-vs-mid futures proxy eased, contango intact. Note the complacency: a low VIX with a +40.6% extension.
  • S8 Credit 🟢 (unchanged): my daily high-yield-vs-investment-grade gauge (HYG/LQD) sits at 0.7455, flat; high-yield spreads (HY OAS) 273 bp as of July 17 — no stress. The oil stress went into rates, not credit spreads.
  • S9 Euphoria 🟠 (unchanged): extension +40.6% (above 35%); weekly RSI ~61 (not extreme, which caps a full red); the speculative periphery cooled today (Palantir −6.1%) but the setup is stretched. Out of the tally, but it lifts the odds.

Read (my synthesis): Family A is under tension (S2, S3 alert; S1 eased to watch as NVDA reclaimed its 50-day line); Family B (breadth) and Family C (volume) under tension. Three families under tension, one of them a leading family, equals 🟠 ALERT. Not 🔴 CRITICAL: SOXX is +40.6% above its 200-day line, credit is calm, VIX is under 20. Not 🟢 NORMAL either — de-escalation is incomplete.

📏 LEVELS (recalculated on the July 22 close)

🏭 SUPPLY CHAIN BY GROUP (July 22) — universe average +0.13% (median negative), a very narrow tape

  • Servers/hardware +6.16% (Super Micro +19.84, Dell +9.32, HPE +3.02; Celestica −1.20) — the only real engine, on SMCI earnings.
  • Chip design +0.29% (Broadcom +2.67, NVDA +2.30, Marvell +1.46, AMD +1.45; Intel −2.68, Arm −2.18, TSMC −0.80).
  • Memory −0.22% (Seagate +1.82, WDC +1.51, Sandisk +0.62; SK Hynix −3.88, Micron −1.17).
  • Cloud/periphery −0.51% (CoreWeave +3.85, Nebius +0.57; Palantir −6.10, Snowflake −1.45).
  • Networking −0.18% (Astera +3.47, Credo +1.97; Corning −5.14, Coherent −1.59).

  • Equipment −1.05% (ASML +0.02; Applied Materials −1.88, KLA −1.32, Teradyne −1.22).
  • Hyperscalers −1.40% (all red: Microsoft −1.86, Google −1.46, Amazon −1.09, Meta −2.58, Apple −0.56, Tesla −1.30, Oracle −0.95) — the group did not participate.
  • EDA −2.58% (Synopsys −2.95, Cadence −2.21).

📊 PROBABILITIES (with ledger and change)

  • D10 correction: ACTIVE (SOXX −15.31%, NVDA −10.35%).
  • Sector drop, −20% within a month: ALREADY TRIGGERED (realized July 17); it stays "occurred" in the rolling 30-day window even though price is now 5.86% above the line.
  • 🔴 Severe crash, −30% within three months: 28% — unchanged from yesterday.
  • 🟡 Market-wide crisis (S&P −20%, AI at the epicenter) within three months: 7% — unchanged.

Ledger for the severe-crash odds (−3.5 down / +3.5 up = 0, unchanged):

  • Down: a wider drawdown buffer (−15.7% to −15.3%; SOXX −17.3% away from the −30% line); NVDA reclaimed its 50-day line with a strengthening daily MACD; no new distribution day; calm credit.
  • Up: breadth collapsing from 86.5% to 44% — the bounce reveals itself as narrow and low-quality (a leading family); a green day on falling volume (masked distribution), no valid follow-through, an unconfirmed rebound (day 3; the July 14–15 and July 20 attempts were sold); rising fragility (extension +40.6%, above 35%).
  • Not scored today: hyperscalers all red and Alphabet's after-hours capex scare are a real risk to the sector's fundamental engine — but they are post-close events, so I don't pull the next session forward into today's number. Flagged in the week-ahead; if confirmed negative, upward pressure on the odds next run.
  • Discipline check: I did NOT cut the odds on the rally itself or on the low VIX; the down-adjustments rest on the drawdown buffer, NVDA's reclaim, distribution and credit. The systemic figure is unchanged: a nearly flat S&P and calm credit pull down, the oil spike and the capex overhang pull up.

💳 CREDIT AND MACRO (July 22)

  • Credit calm: HYG/LQD 0.7455, flat on the session and over five sessions; HY OAS 273 bp (July 17, latest available), well under the 350 bp green line. The oil stress went into rates, not spreads.
  • Rates: 10-year 4.63%, 2-year 4.26% (both as of July 21, one-day data lag); the 10y-2y curve at 37 bp. Web reads put the 10-year rising toward 4.63% on July 22 as well, on the oil move.
  • Fed: FedWatch shows roughly 83% odds of a hold at the July 28–29 meeting (July 21 reading via aggregators of CME FedWatch; no distinct fresh July 22 read, so not extrapolated) — full triple-verification not reached. No forward guidance: the FOMC is a two-way catalyst.
  • Geopolitics: 11th night of U.S. strikes on Iran, with the Secretary of State calling Iran "not serious" about talks; Brent 93.07 (+1.8%), WTI 88.64 (+4.2%) on the conflict and a Gulf storm; gold 4,137 (+1.5%). Transmission: energy prices to inflation to rates.

👀 NEXT 7–14 DAYS

  • July 23 (today): Intel Q2 (after the close); Starship test (rescheduled).
  • Read tomorrow (reported after July 22 close): Alphabet (strong quarter but shares fell on capex growth), Tesla, GE Vernova, Texas Instruments, ServiceNow.
  • July 27: Kimi K3 weights released — the first real architectural test of the open Chinese model.
  • July 28–29: FOMC (hold ~83%). July 29: SK Hynix Q2 (Seoul; HBM4 and pricing in focus); July 29–30: hyperscaler capex (Microsoft, Meta, Google, Amazon) — the single most important variable, now in the spotlight after Alphabet's signal.
  • July 30: Samsung. August 26: Nvidia Q2 FY27.

🛡️ CAPITAL-PRESERVATION NOTE (Level 3 active)

The bounce continues in price (SOXX +0.51%, a third green day) but worsens in substance: participation collapsed to 44%, volume fell, there is still no valid follow-through, the weekly momentum cross still points down and — above all — the group that funds the cycle (the hyperscalers) closed red across the board while Alphabet spooked investors on capex after the bell. A green index pulled up by two names (Super Micro, Dell) is not a turn. In this group, violent rebounds inside a downtrend (July 14–15, July 20) have been sold; and the week brings five-plus binary catalysts. Discipline on levels matters more than the forecast. De-escalation is 0/4: new distribution days in the last five sessions; SOXX still below its 50-day line (6th day); no valid follow-through (possible from day 4, July 24 at the earliest); breadth 0 of 3.
